Thesis students at Jabra

Thesis students at Jabra

We are currently doing our thesis project in collaboration with GN Netcom – Jabra, with focus on designing an intuitive cordless headset for contact centres. In relation to this we have been assigned an office space at Jabra, which have made us a more integrated part of the company. Jabra has perceived us as their own smaller in-house design consultancy, which has provided us with other assignments of industrial design relevance, and given us insight into the company as a workplace. Beside our thesis project, we have been given the opportunity to work on other design projects for Jabra. In relation to this we have delivered a product design, which is expected produced and launched early 2012.

Being an industrial design student from Architecture & Design we have experienced that teamwork and hereby an interdisciplinary understanding of the design process is of great value and quality in both having the overview and being able to focus on specific areas. Furthermore we have been trained in starting from scratch by observing and understanding the users’ needs and solving the problems by generating innovative ideas.
The engineering part of the education has provided us with a greater mechanical understanding of the design process and enabled us to communicate with mechanical engineers and hereby end up with a more finished solution.

1) What are your work tasks?

Because I own my own company, I am able to choose my own work tasks and design jobs. This means that I work with a wide range of customers and product types. I have been involved in development / engineering and design, designing products from the first idea to the final production starts. As an example I have been working on both lifestyle products and outdoor furniture.

The outdoor furniture sought to transform the waiting period into something else than wasted time by creating fun, interesting and mentally stimulating surroundings. In this project we have also worked closely together with an engineer, creating the optimal product for production and material technology.

As an independent entrepreneur I also have a lot of other tasks e.g. administration, customer contact, finding suitable business partners, marketing of my company etc.

2) How is your training from Architecture & Design being put to use in your job?

My master degree in Industrial Design have given me the unique possibility to work both with engineering and design, creating products with much higher complexity and at the same time ensure that my customers initial idea are expressed in the final product, by being able to participate in the design process all the way, not only in the initial stages, but also in the later stages regarding development, material science etc.

The design process and the project work I have learned at Architecture & Design have given me the possibility to be a part of almost any type of development process and almost any kind of product design.

Because of this I am also able to work together with marketing, engineers and other groups because I am able to communicate with these groups, so they are able to understand how I want the product to be.

Furthermore, the acquired communication skills, such as those applied in graphic design, have given me a perfect balance between the design practices and my technical expertise.

1) What are your work tasks?

I’m working in an innovation centre at LEGO Engineering and we are investigating new processes and technologies that radically change future production or make way for product innovations. My job primarily consists in the management of various R&D projects. As an example, I have been involved in the development of a HMI (Human-Machine Interface) project for our assembly lines, which has significantly reduced the training time of new operators here. I have also been involved with the development and communication of the department’s visions, strategies, processes and portfolio management.

2) How is your training from Architecture & Design being put to use in your job?

My Master’s in Industrial Design has given me a fundamental understanding of the holistic design process, in which the technical aspects are an integrated and important part of the final product. This has been a great advantage for me when engaging in a team, which focuses on technical and production-related processes that enable product development.

The project-oriented work in the programme has shown me how to take a natural approach to the role as project manager in a variety of projects. The process is almost the same, whether you develop products or new technologies.

Furthermore, the acquired communication skills, such as those applied in graphic design, have given me a perfect balance between the design practices and my technical expertise.

Architecture & Design has given me a broad understanding of product development and enabled me to come up with end-to-end solutions. The programme gave me insight into the competences of the various professional groups, which ensures a good workflow and makes communication so much easier and more fun. I learned that good solutions are rarely found by one person alone, but come about through collaboration, discussion and the interchange of ideas with others.
